Computing & Mathematics

Welcome to the Department of Computing and Mathematics.

This has been a very exciting year for computing both within WIT and nationally. On a local level FeedHenry, a spinout of WIT’s computing research centre the TSSG, was bought out by American multinational Red Hat for €63.5m. FeedHenry is headquartered in Waterford with offices in Dublin, Staines in the UK and Burlington in Massachusetts, USA.

Dr. Mícheál Ó’Foghlú is the Chief Technical Officer for FeedHenry joined the WIT computing faculty in 1996 and has been instrumental in the extraordinary development of the TSSG.

On a national scale the computing industry in Ireland is going from strength to strength. Irish third-level colleges are struggling to provide enough graduates for industry’s needs. This has created a boom time for computing graduates.

"The digital technology sector contributes 4.4% to Ireland’s GDP, and is growing at 16% per year – that is more than 10 times the rate of growth of the economy as a whole.

With exports worth €72 billion per annum (40% of total national exports) and four of the top five exporters in Ireland being technology companies, this sector is a major employer, accounting for an estimated 105,000 employees."

WIT has the largest computing faculty in Ireland and, in the TSSG, it has the largest computing research centre in the country. We offer a wide range of computing programmes designed to stimulate students’ interests in a broad spectrum of computing disciplines while retaining a very strong industry focus.

We have very strong links with many foreign universities. We currently have over 40 students from a Chinese university (NUIST) here in WIT completing their fourth year of a joint programme. Many of our students study abroad as part of their programme in some of our partner colleges.

WIT is internationally renowned for its excellence in computing research. Many of our faculty are world-leaders in their field. Last year WIT secured in excess of €20m in funding for computing-related research.

The calibre of the staff in the Department of Computing and Mathematics and the quality of our graduates is a source of great pride to me. The Department has a reputation for excellence and we strive to ensure that every student is empowered to achieve their full potential.

Thank you for your interest,

Dr. Pádraig Kirwan, BSc, Grad. Dip., MSc, MA, PhD
